Pipli, Puri district (Eastern Odisha)
One of Odisha’s more prominent cultural hubs, with its own local festivals and traditions. Visitors often come to explore Pipli’s craft workshops and unique handicrafts.
Artisan community
Typically working in family-based setups, Pipli artisans are known as "chitrakars" or "appliqué workers”. They have a rich history dating back to the 11th century, when their craft was primarily used for decorating temples. Over time, Pipli began to be featured in handicraft items like canopies, lanterns and umbrellas, that have become popular exports from Odisha.
Appliqué features
The vibrant appliqué technique typically involves stitching pieces of cloth cut into shapes onto a base fabric, creating intricate and colourful designs.
