In the Mahabharata, the game of pasa (dice throw) represents a pivotal episode, catalysing the Pandavas’ 13 year exile when Yudhishthira gambled away his kingdom, wealth, brothers and Draupadi. It was a game reserved for royalty in ancient India - associated with leisure, strategy and divine will. Perhaps this is why the distinct chequered motifs became such a prevalent symbol in pasapalli textile - a vibrant double-ikat Sambalpuri weave that derives its name from the game.
